the Hub on Smith

Project: Community

, Sheridan, Wyoming

The process

Project completed: 2017

This project was constructed in three phases and maintained occupancy in portions of the facility throughout the entire construction process.  Project initiatives included reorganization of the activities program, food services, administrative offices and multiple building additions. There were many challenges in integrating the new with the old. The original building was constructed in 1980 and received previous building additions in 1990, 2001 and 2003.

The existing structure was repurposed to the greatest extent possible. Upgrades to the exterior fenestration and facades on the east and south elevations create a refreshed appearance from Smith Street. The Hub’s commercial food services required an addition to the building to accommodate the revitalized food preparation area and new commercial kitchen equipment. The Hub took this opportunity to revive the method of serving in-house meals, which changed the way patrons receive their meals. In turn, the dining room was fully renovated, and a full-service coffee bar was added in the lobby renovation and expansion.

Building systems were completely upgraded, inclusive of HVAC, IT/WiFi/technology, digital displays, multi-media projection, sound systems and new LED lighting. In addition, the client wanted to improve the security of the facility and access control.

All areas were reinvented with maximum flexibility and multi-use capability at the forefront of all decisions impacting this project. The public areas were developed with Dementia Friendly design considerations throughout.

Evolve Architecture provided full architectural and interior design services for the renovation and expansion to the Sheridan Senior Center. In addition, Evolve Architecture worked hand-in-hand with the client to select interior furnishings, artwork and customized signage.

Whitney Centennial Hall

The process

Project completed: 2019

This 100-bed, modern approach to residence hall living resides on the Northern Wyoming Community College District campus in Sheridan, Wyoming. The primary focus of this project was to create a place for students to live while developing life-long communication, conflict management and time management skills. The floor plan layout for this project is based on a similar hall built on the NWCCD campus in Gillette, Wyoming.

This project implemented “lessons learned” from the Gillette project to enhance the 32,000 SF structure. One key difference is utilizing cross-laminated timber panel system for the floor/ceiling structure between each level of the three-story building; creating more usable space for building systems without increasing floor to floor heights. Conventional assemblies take up 24”-30” of floor/ceiling space which in turn minimizes available space for the building systems. An additional benefit of the CLT panels allows the wood to be the exposed finished ceiling which saves significant money in supplemental ceiling assemblies and provides the warmth of the wood throughout the interior spaces.

The exterior façade of Whitney Centennial Hall is unique to the Sheridan College campus. Maintenance free materials including brick veneer with precast concrete detailing, exterior insulation finish systems, pre-finished metal wall & roof panels and fenestration assemblies provide a long-term, energy efficient building envelope.

Other features included in the new residence hall include:

  • Staff apartment that has two bedrooms, one bath, independent laundry room, full kitchen with dining and living room spaces.
  • Large main-level lobby with centrally located common student lounge with kitchenette.
  • Large student lounge areas with kitchenettes on each floor.
  • Small group and larger group study rooms on each floor.
  • Student laundry facilities on each floor.
  • Residence suite includes full bathroom for every four students.
  • Fully accessible room in accordance with Americans With Disabilities Act Requirements.
  • Data and WiFi throughout facility to accommodate studying and gaming for residents.
  • Enhanced security with card access readers on main building entrances, elevator cab and on interior side of egress stairways.

Evolve Architecture provided full architectural and interior design services for the new Whitney Centennial Hall project.  In addition, Evolve Architecture worked hand-in-hand with the client to select interior furnishings.

Mydland Market

Project: Lifestyle

The process

Project completed: 2020

Mydland Market features a restaurant, bar, exterior elevated patio, coffee shop and packaged liquor store designed to be a neighborhood destination for families.  Extensive views to the Bighorn Mountains were maximized in all spaces to keep the direct connection to the outdoors at the forefront of the design as was maintaining intimate-sized spaces that say, “Welcome to our neighborhood!”

Evolve Architecture provided full architectural and interior design services for the Mydland Market project.  In addition, Evolve Architecture worked hand-in-hand with the client to select interior furnishings, artwork and customized signage.

“The project exceeded our expectations regarding creative design, transparent goals and processes, and a final building we are proud of. Our favorite feature is the way the architecture adheres outdoor elements with an inviting and fun interior. The patio seating highlights that amazing view, making it the best seat in town (in our opinion).”

Synergy Dental by Evolve Architecture, Gillette, Wyoming

The process

Project completed: 2015

Synergy Dental Clinic occupies a prominent property located at the intersection of South 4-J Road and West Lakeway Road in Gillette, Wyoming.  This building was originally designed and constructed as a Godfather’s Pizza. Evolve Architecture was retained to create an exterior identity for a new, state-of-the-art, dental practice while re-purposing the existing structure to the greatest extent possible. New shed roof dormers with steel knee braces were added to break up the simplistic hip roof form that remained from the Godfather’s Pizza brand.

New Exterior Facade Includes:

  • New and larger windows with performance glazing in pre-finished metal frame assemblies.
  • Implementation of maintenance-free exterior materials consisting of pre-finished steel wall panels, roof panels, steel gutters, downspouts, fascia, accent band & parapet caps.
  • Concrete-based manufactured stone veneer.
